Dyker Heights Christmas Lights
1072 80th St
Brooklyn, NY 11228
In the late 1800’s Dyker Heights, Brooklyn, NY was created as a speculative luxury housing development by Walter L. Johnson, founder and one of the neighborhood developers. Mr. Johnson named his new community Dyker Heights, since his family’s land overlooked Dyker Meadow, better known today as The Dyker Beach Park and Golf Course. He started by dividing out sections of his own land, building houses, and then developing an attractive suburban community.
Dyker Heights is an affluent residential neighborhood in the southwest corner of the borough of Brooklyn in New York City. It sits on a hill between Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Borough Park, and Gravesend Bay. The neighborhood is officially bounded by 7th and 14th Avenues, 65th Street, and the Belt Parkway. Today, this neighborhood is famous for its Christmas holiday decorations and is regularly referred as; “Dyker Heights Christmas Lights”.
There are a few versions of how the tradition got started, local historians say it dates all the way back to the 1940’s. One of the well-known pioneers is Lucy Spata, with her famed house on 84th street where just about every inch of the property is decorated. The Spata’s have been decorating for more than 40 years and add a little more each year. In addition to keeping the family tradition going strong and putting smiles on thousands of kids’ faces from around the world, the Spata’s use this fame to give back to the community through charities.
Please be courteous and respectful to the residents that display these beautiful lights for your enjoyment. We kindly ask that all visitors refrain from littering, blocking driveways and honking horns. For your safety, please use crosswalks and caution while crossing streets.
