Jordany Genao | Espíritu de sabor
Wave Hill Public Garden & Cultural Center
4900 Independence Ave
Bronx, NY 10471
Jordany Genao’s Sunporch installation Espíritu de sabor draws from their research on the pre-colonial history of the islands of Boriken (Puerto Rico), Ayiti (Dominican Republic and Haiti) and Kubanakan (Cuba). Building on the ways in which history gives rise to sovereignty, they will work with materials such as ceramics, natural by-products and Caribbean plants crafted into abstract forms, botanical drawings and clay bodies that incorporate plants used for ritual purposes, medicine and food. In addition, the artist will work with aspects of the Taino Medicine Wheel, a cosmogram of nature aligned with the cardinal points, Caribbean architecture and Arawak-Taino cosmology. Genao’s installation builds on botanical practices that value integrating plants and their energies into our lives holistically and respectfully.
