Soeun Bae’s Sunroom installation presents hypothetical sculptural tools for the regeneration of a hybrid organism that depends on a human-made and controlled environment. Her research is focused on the plant life of the Marco Polo Stufano Conservatory at Wave Hill, which, designed and built in 1906, houses plants from warmer regions around the world, among them palms, ferns, bromeliads, cacti and succulents. In addition to the conditions required to maintain the perfect environment for its inhabitants, Bae considers the expertise and dedicated labor of the gardeners and horticulturists who care for the plants and gardens at Wave Hill. Abstracting the systems of conservation from plant life, Bae aims to spark reflection on our responsibility to nurture and protect the environment that we live in.
